water damage now return icon is dead

Got 3drops of rain water in cell. None in battery. Took apart, put all in bag of rice for 2 days. Powered up,charges, works except for: screen is greenish stead of right blue, return icon on bottom right front of phone is inactive &not showing as is icon on left the home icon. Can these functions be restored? If so how? Cells insured but$200 deductible I cant afford. Husbands in chemotherapy & we're buried in medical bills. Any help appreciated. Tx!

Mom Woods, pardon the sarcasm of my colleague con. He is very knowledgeable but got burned out with the rice myth. Rice is a good first aid, but does not fix phones:) The major issue you will run into is corrosion damage. The very first thing I would do is to disassemble it by following this guide Take a careful and close look at all components and connectors .Look for corrosion, evaluate the pins in the connectors etc,. Take a look at all connectors as well as cable ends. After that I would suggest that you clean it a couple of times in sterile water. Use a soft brush and clean it very, very thouroughly with the sterile water. With any chance of corrosion, you will most certainly have to remove all the EMI shields as well. Once you got the gross contamination cleaned, use 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and clean your parts some more. For a proper cleaning, use this guide. It was written for a 3G but it is still pertinent to your phone as well. I can not stress the importance of a good cleaning enough, so do it over and over while replacing the alcohol after each cleaning. Do not use compressed air for the cleaning since that can drive liquid as well as corrosion particles into areas that will cause trouble later on. Do not use drinking water, if you need to use water, use sterile water. Isopropyl alcohol in the higher concentration will evaporate quickly and dissipate the water. The importance here is the cleaning. Once it is properly cleaned, reassemble and re-evaluate. Even with all this, there is still a chance that your phone will not work, but I definitely would give it a try. If after all that the display should still have the color issue, you may have to replace it. BTW the display might be more expensive than the insurance deductible. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks oldturkey03 for your informative, very useful reply. I used the rice trick as at the time i didn't know what else to do. My cell at least began to work after a couple of days with no further help then the rice.

I got into the Assistive setting and now have the "back" button on the screen to use in lieu of the return button which is still not working. I agree I need to take phone apart for good cleaning but wanted to be sure before I did so that no changes to the way to do it were needed since it's a S4, not a 3.

I will follow your instructions and hope it fixes the screen issue. I can live with the cell as it is now but the screen is VERY sensitive and during a call if it's even lightly against my cheek shrieks in protest and the caller hears a louuuuud prolonged beeeeep.

I haven't attempted it yet as I'm recovering from a second bout with the flu in two months and feel like the dickens. Can't afford deductible yet due to hubby's medical bills. Have to keep them paid down so they'll continue to treat him. His needs come way way before that of my cell.

Again, thank you for your help. When one is going thru health issues with a loved one sarcasm from any source, cannot be found helpful. While I can understand the origin, I posted needing help, and that's exactly what you gave me and for that I'm indebted. I hope you will continue to help numbnuts like me in the future. I'll follow your guidance and let you know of my success.

I understand. I think may be we should try to put an end to it by showing what it does or does not , do to a phone. I have a couple of spare ones and am thinking about doing an "experiment".

One last question: if you are familiar w/the S4 can you tell me which tweezers will be needed that will work best-blunt, angled or pointed? Or should I get more then one style? Is static a concern when taking apart phone-is it an issue and can it be circumvented using particular tools-nylon etc? Want to have the right tools on hand before I start. Thanks!
