Top of touch screen won't respond

My iPhone is sitting at the activation screen. I am able to swipe to unlock and select my country. When I press the arrow in the top right to go to the next page, it doesn't respond. I've tried pushing with some force but the touch on that specific spot does not respond. To add to further confusion I powered the phone off and swiped across the top and it registered fine. Has anyone had a similar issue and found a fix? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is it always the same area that is unresponsive?

- de

Yes, I managed to use the zoom feature to get the arrow over to the functioning screen and to the main home screen. The whole right side is unresponsive. I cannot press any of the 4th column of apps.

- de

You need a new digitizer. If one part of the touch screen is unresponsive, the digitizer circuit is fractured.

I have my main phone, we'll call it main. I'm repairing one and thats the one causing the issue, let's call it fixer. I disassembled both phones and switched the screens. When I turned on the Fixer phone with my main phone screen on I had the same problem. When I turned on my main phone with the Fixer screen I was able to touch and have the right side function.

bad touch screen IC or bad connector on logic board. Let me see what I find on the diagram.

Cody, since you already tested the display/touch on a separate phone, there are two things I would check on. One is the touchscreen connector. Make sure it is properly seated and make sure the pins on the inside of the connector are not bend or broken. The other issue could be the touch screen IC, you may want to try a reflow, or if you have the tools, reball the chip. Hope this helps, good luck.

Is there any tutorial to accessing that IC and how to reball it?

- de

First off, it is important to distinguish between a reflow and a reball. "Reflowing is the process in which the solder on the GPU is reheated until the solder liquidates, allowing it to resettle and form proper bonds with the motherboard. this is what you do for cracks in the solder i.e. Xbox 360 RROD. Reballing is the process in which the GPU is removed, and the tiny solder balls on the bottom of the graphics card are replaced with a better, lead-based solder. It's then replaced back on the motherboard and reflowed to form proper bonds with the motherboard." For the reballing of a BGA check this out. If you need a bit more of a visual, here is a decent video. For that you most certainly will have to get the proper stencil 9it is available) as well as the solder balls and I'd be looking into a rework station. Not very economical for just one repair. Hope this explains it :)

If it is the same spot or spots that are unresponsive then you might have a bad digitizer. You can use the guide here to open it up and reseat the digitizer cable and make sure its making good connection....

Otherwise, I would go with replacing the screen assembly.

Hope This Helps!
